Raiders of the Not-so-Lost Archives: Lawrenceville Heely Scholars
Lawrenceville’s 2023 Heely Scholars in Archival and Historical Research embarked on a two-week odyssey last summer, navigating the “artifacts” in the School’s Stephan Archives instead of ancient tombs. Their goal wasn’t the Holy Grail, but rather a deeper understanding of what their school was like during the Age of Imperialism (approximately 1890-1919), a period of America’s global expansion. Sifting through letters, yearbooks, student records, photos, and more each of the Scholars uncovered a topic of personal interest, pursued it in a fall term research seminar, and presented their findings at an Academic Research Showcase last month.
Hutchins Scholars in Science Research at 13
Thirteen years after its inception, Lawrenceville’s Hutchins Scholars in Science Research program currently enjoys research partnerships with the Seung Kim Laboratory at Stanford University Medical School, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Trinity College in Dublin. From an initial “class” of eight Scholars, the program now operates three cohorts with an average of 36 students overall participating each summer.

History Teacher Vielka Hoy Creates a Bridge to College
Disturbed by inequities in the college admission process for under-resourced students that she saw before coming to Lawrenceville, history teacher Vielka Hoy decided to do something about it. Read about how she combined her dual interests in social and computer science to create Bridge to College Inc and help students find their perfect match.
LESSONS AND CAROLS
On December 12, Lawrentians celebrated together with an evening of readings, musical performances, and community singing at the School’s Lessons and Carols in Edith Memorial Chapel. The service featured readings and musical performances from the Lawrentians and the Lawrenceville Singers. The service closed with a moving benediction, wishing fellowship, peace, and love to all. A recording of the event and additional photos will be available later this month at Lawrenceville.org/lessonsandcarols.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Sammy Bhatia ’15
On Sunday, November 12, members of Lawrenceville's cross country team joined alumni to run the Princeton Hi-Tops Half Marathon in memory of Sammy Bhatia '15. Sammy ran the half-marathon with his father in 2022 (pictured), and it is a treasured memory within the family. Sammy's family generously organized this year's "Team Lawrenceville for Sammy Bhatia," providing shirts for the runners and trophies for the fastest boy and girl students. Special congratulations to Megan Kumar '24 and Bastian Bocklage '26, the fastest girl and boy runners for Team Lawrenceville! Thank you to the Bhatia family for organizing this special event, and to all the Lawrentians who participated to honor Sammy's memory.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Matthew Schorr ’09
He’s back! Matthew Schorr ‘09 has returned to Lawrenceville as a teacher of mathematics. How does he feel that being a teacher, coach, and part of a House advisory team benefits Lawrentians? What does he love about the House system? And what superpower would he choose? All this and more in 5 Questions 4!
Read the full Q&A here!
How does being involved in so many aspects of a Lawrentian’s school life (teacher, coach, club advisor, House team, etc.) help you make the Lawrenceville experience better for each student?
I’ve always believed that the most effective way to be a good teacher is to have strong relationships with the students. Lawrenceville is able to foster a unique environment that caters to the development of these strong relationships between faculty and the student body in turn allowing for success in the classroom. By getting to know the students and what drives them outside of the classroom you are able to help motivate and cater to each student’s needs inside the classroom. Being able to celebrate the successes our students have around the Harkness table and in their endeavors outside of the classroom help foster a vibrant community that is difficult to find replicated anywhere else.
What do you think makes the House system special?
Whenever I run into an alumnus of the school, one of the first questions that I always hear asked is “What House were you in?” The House system allows for students to have their own small community within the larger school community that they can own. Each House is able to form their own identity and helps students take ownership of how they want their experience to be in a way you can’t necessarily do with the student body as a whole.
