Mary kate barnes announces her retirement

Following more than three decades of dedicated service to Lawrenceville, Mary Kate Barnes H’59 ’77 P’11 ’13 ’19, Assistant Head of School and Director of Advancement, has announced her retirement this coming December. Over the course of her career, Mary Kate’s work has significantly impacted the School community, touching the lives of countless students, alumni, and parents. Most recently, under her leadership, Lawrenceville successfully completed a historic capital campaign, Emerge Transformed, with over $475 million raised. This remarkable achievement will leave an enduring legacy.

Throughout her career, Mary Kate has established herself as a national leader among development professionals, earning the prestigious Robert Bell Crow Award from CASE (The Council for Advancement and Support of Education) in 2017, which recognizes independent school advancement practitioners for distinguished service to the profession. Her dedication and passion have set new standards in independent school philanthropy.

Mary Kate’s journey with Lawrenceville has been equally remarkable for its longevity, and she has worked alongside five Heads of School during her tenure – Steve Murray, Liz Duffy, Michael Cary, Phil Jordan, and Si Bunting – leaving her mark on the School’s growth. She has been an integral part of the Lawrenceville community, and her warmth and genuine caring have earned the appreciation of colleagues and friends across campus. Her husband, Dave ’77 P’11 ’13 ’19, and three daughters, Emma ’11, Kelley ’13, and Meg ’19, are active members of our alumni community, further strengthening her deep bond with the School.

We look forward to celebrating Mary Kate’s many contributions to Lawrenceville ahead of her departure in December. The School will be conducting a nationwide search for her successor.

"For 32 years I have been incredibly fortunate to work with the amazing members of this community - alumni, parents, staff, students, faculty - some of whom are my dearest lifelong friends. Leaving here will be bittersweet, but Lawrenceville will always have a special place in my heart.

Thank you to Lawrenceville’s trustees, and to Steve Murray, Liz Duffy, Michael Cary, Phil Jordan, and Si Bunting for the opportunity to have served the School in this way. I look forward to watching Lawrenceville continue to grow and thrive, and will always be grateful to have played a role in its wonderful story."

- Mary Kate Barnes H’59 ’77 P’11 ’13 ’19
